He has addressed a wide variety of audiology and professional topics via hundreds of publications and is well known internationally for his entertaining and educational podium presentations.
ABSTRACT: As audiologists, our professional goal for our patients involves much more than simply “hearing louder.” Indeed, the goal is better defined as “listening success.” To be able to listen successfully, multiple cognitive abilities need consideration including overall processing speed, working memory, attention and more. The interaction of cognition and audition is of paramount importance to the patient and the audiologist, because listening is where hearing meets brain. In this presentation, top-down (i.e., cognitive) and bottom-up (i.e., sensory) processes will be explored with specific regard to which technologies facilitate improved “listening success.” Further, we’ll explore and review recently published information which supports the use of these technologies. The application of specific “intelligent automatics” (such as noise reduction, adaptive directionality, and coordinated compression) to working memory, binaural processing, spatial hearing and more will be addressed. A brief question and answer period will be provided.

Featured Speaker6:00 PM–8:00 PM Hearing aid selection and fitting: 20 years of progress? Vanderbilt University; Siemens Hearing Instruments Abstract This seminar reviews what has happened in the world of hearing aid selection and fitting since the first meeting of the Academy 20 years ago. The overall fitting process will be divided into three sections: pre-testing, technology, and verification. We’ll work together to answer such questions as: What pre-tests do we have today that will help predict benefit and satisfaction? Assist with counseling? What technology has emerged? Is there really research evidence to support its use? And finally—how do we verify that the fitting is appropriate? Does speech mapping really work? Have those 20 years of advancements been incorporated into daily clinical practice? We’ll find out!

8:00 AM–9:00 AM Making Sense Out of Cents University of Colorado, Professor Emeritus Abstract Audiology practices are viewed as a blend of professional health care services and traditional retail trade. Yet, traditional retail businesses use certain marketing and pricing strategies that may make audiologists uncomfortable. This presentation will address the importance of providing patients with pertinent choices, including their choice of the audiology practice, product costs, and technology levels. Audiologists strive to survive in a market with declining reimbursement for services and increasing competition for product sales where patients have more choices of where to seek their hearing services. This presentation will provide audiologists with a better understanding of how patients make decisions including (a) how they select the best office practice to meet their hearing needs; (b) how they choose select technology; (3) the role of pricing and retail price models in audiology practices; (4) the relationship between price and quality; and (5) the role of emotions in rational decision making. The presentation will assist independent practitioners to successfully compete under current and future market conditions.

Featured Speaker1:00 PM–5:15 PM Diagnosis, Fitting and Counseling Strategies to Improve Long-Term Hearing Aid Benefit Aud Net - Audio Scan Abstract As most experienced hearing aid fitters know, what may be most subjectively acceptable to a patient in their initial hearing aid experience may likely not be an effective long-term solution to their hearing problem. Fitting procedures and counseling strategies that shift the focus of hearing aid utility from a subjective reference to an objective verification of hearing aid benefit can go a long way in securing long-term results. Principles like brain plasticity and adaptation to new stimulus conditions need to become more of a driving force in amplification selection, fitting and counseling.
